Japanese native Kazu Murakami brings more than 30 years of experience in Asian and American culinary practices to O-Ku as executive chef. As the culinary leader of O-Ku, Murakami utilizes unique and traditional ingredients to ensure a high-quality dining experience.
Moving from Tokyo to South Carolina in 1987, Murakami has worked at several authentic Japanese restaurants, including the original Charleston peninsula sushi restaurant, Sushi Hiro, where he learned traditional sushi techniques from Chef Hiro Osumi. Prior to being promoted to executive chef, Murakami also worked several positions within O-Ku. While at O-Ku, the establishment has been named “Best Sushi” and “Best Japanese” by Charleston City Paper in 2014 and 2015.
In his free time, Murakami takes part in creative outlets such as photography, aligning with his artistic capabilities. He also enjoys table tennis and in 2015 was named winner of the South Carolina Official Table Tennis State Championships.
